Opening School Mass

Last Friday 4^th February we celebrated the Opening School Mass to begin our school year and to induct our new leaders into the positions of service. Our 2019 School Captains shared with the school community their vision for the new school theme – Dream Bigger. I have included some of their inspiring and reflective words that link to our mission of challenging our students this year.

“Dream bigger” was a theme we found painted into an alleyway in a graffiti walk through the streets of Melbourne… it encourages us to do better things, to be better people, to work harder at school, to play better sport and to dream of jobs we might aspire to achieve. It tells us not to sit by and let life go buy but to dream and dream bigger…” a dream doesn’t become reality through magic, it takes sweat, determination and hard work”

We use scripture to draw a deeper meaning from “Dream Bigger” that connects us to our tradition and history…It also gives us guidance about how we should be living our lives.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good.”

What this means is that when we have God at the centre of our lives, all that we do as a community, together with our friends, teachers and parents, will produce good. If we love God, it means that we strive to think, act and do like him. We may not always achieve this, but if we try to Learn as a way of life; Lead to make a difference and Live with hope, we will be working together for good.

Swimming Carnival

A glorious day was had by all at the Annual Swimming Carnival. The weather was perfect, the competition strong and the students exemplary. De La Salle were the victorious house and were well deserving winners. It was a lovely community activity that showcased our enthusiastic and positive student body. Please see Mrs Litchfield’s (Primary Sports Co-ordinator) comprehensive report later in the newsletter.

Biannual School Fete

Save the date – 29^th March 5pm – 8pm. Our hardworking Fete sub-committee of the P & F are busy planning this important fundraiser. They have dispatched raffle tickets to all families to help support their revenue raising endeavour. Wonderful prizes of Husqvarna equipment have been generously donated by Chambers Garage and tickets are on sale for $2 each (or 3 for $5) Please return the raffle books asap – preferably sold (but they must be returned regardless). There promises to be a fun night of activities and food for the whole family and community. If you could give some thought to assisting in any possible way it would be greatly appreciated. Many hands make light work to benefit all of our students.

Our P & F continue to work to provide invaluable funds to support our resources and students. Only this week we received a glowing thank-you from the Meals on Wheels committee acknowledging that “The P & F are an asset not only to the school but to our community”.

Information Sessions

Tonight we will host two different Information sessions for the Infants (in the Infants Breakout space) at 6pm and then for New families, Year 7 and new IPad users in Rooms 7 & 8 also at 6pm. This will be followed by a shared meal and BBQ. Our Year 10 leaders will be assisting with child minding and serving the meal. This is an informal way for staff to meet new families and establish important connections for the school year. We look forward to seeing you there.

Year 10 ROSA Information Evening

Next Monday evening Hennessy Catholic College will join us in for a BBQ for Year 10 2019 and Year 10 2018 students to build on the Catholic pathway to Young. It will follow an important information session at 5.30pm about the ROSA credential (Record of Student Achievement) for our current Year 10 cohort. Please RSVP for catering purposes. We encourage all of our Year 10 students to attend regardless of their intentions for 2020.

Our Year 10 cohort have melded to become a formidable force within our school. Already they have volunteered on so many levels; at the Vigil Mass, Swimming Carnival, different leadership activities, Information Sessions and they embody an enthusiastic passion to make Sacred Heart a better place. They are shaping as exceptional role models for their peers and the younger students. We congratulate them for taking on these new challenges and learning invaluable new skills. Thank you to Ms Marsay who has shaped a progressive and sustainable model of leadership where our leaders take on nominated portfolio responsibilities to ensure that they provide the best service to the school. More information on these important roles will follow in subsequent newsletters.

A REMINDER- John Coutis presentation

A reminder about the John Coutis, presentations to our school next Thursday 21 February. John is a motivational speaker who tailors his presentations to the age and interests of his audience and aims to focus attention on positive wellbeing and meeting new challenges. We are pleased to offer, to our wider community, a breakfast presentation at 8am in rooms 7/8. Our Wellbeing committee will provide a light breakfast during the presentation. Everyone is welcome (please RSVP to the Front Office for catering purposes). Our Secondary and Primary students will attend presentations at 9.05 and 10.05 respectively. There will be child minding in the Primary playground from 7.30 to allow staff, parents and community members to mingle before the presentation. The light breakfast is, unfortunately, only for the adults attending the session.

A very big thank you to all the staff and students for the amazing beginning to the new school year. It is already crammed with lots of happenings and memorable moments. We strive to work together to take our students wherever they desire to go, to improve and to respond to the challenges offered to them. Our staff work tirelessly to ensure that they provide each and every student the very best chance to thrive.

Opening School Mass

We had a wonderful opening school Mass last Friday. Our Student leadership team were inducted into their roles. It was a truly joyful celebration.

Parish Weekend Mass:

Thank you to all the families and parishioners that gathered with us Saturday night to welcome and bless the Student Leadership team and staff. Thank you to the Student Leadership team for their involvement in leading the ministries.

Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.

We prayer for the students who being their preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist this Thursday night. We thank and prayer for parishioners and school staff who are leading and assisting with this very important faith journey of our students.

REMINDER: Archdiocesan Representative Pathways

Starting from this year all nominations for sporting representative pathways, except for Swimming, Cross country and Athletics will be carried out online through the CE, MacKillop (Primary) and CCC (Secondary) sports websites. If you and your child are interested in trialling for any of sports, please take the time to visit these sites for further information on dates, location and nominations.

Primary Sport News

Last week, Primary students Dominic Shepard and Henry Hazlett travelled to Gundagai to trial for the C&G Cricket team. Bridget Sharman, Eliza Tozer and Zara Bodycott trialled for the C&G Tennis team in Young.

Congratulations to Dominic, who has made the Archdiocesan Cricket team and will compete again next Thursday against Wagga.

Sacred Heart Swimming Carnival

Congratulation to De La Salle on being crowned the Sacred Heart Swimming Champions last Thursday.

Mercy were awarded house cheer and O’Shaughnessy highest attendance.

Well done to all students. We had wonderful attendance at the carnival and excellent sportsmanship and participation. Congratulations to all swimmers who have qualified for the next level.
