Friday seems to roll around very quickly when I need to finish the newsletter. Another week filled with successes and many wonderful moments. This week we sent our athletes to Canberra to compete in the Canberra Goulburn Diocesan Athletics Carnival and our students achieved outstanding results. From the carnival a record number of our students have been selected to compete at CCC in Sydney in coming weeks. This is a wonderful achievement. Please read the sports report from one of our Year 10 students below.
This week staff spent time analysing the assessment data from NAPLAN, DIBELS, PAT testing and class assessment to identify areas of celebration and areas upon which we can build and extend. For many years we have recognised the need to develop the writing skills of our students across the school and finally this year, through the hard work of the staff and a commitment to new teaching programs and strategies we have experienced considerable growth in the writing results across the 4 years of testing (Years 3,5,7,9). In addition, in all but one of the tests our student exceeded the norms achieved by regional rural schools and our Year 7 results in Numeracy were exceptional. While we celebrate these positive results and growth we also recognise that we need to look at building the spelling skills of our students and encourage them to focus on spelling in all subjects to improve their strategies. We have implemented the Spelling Mastery program in our Years 3 to 6 only this year in response to identified needs. Hopefully this will yield positive results. Considerations of how to build skills in secondary will be a focus in coming professional learning.
Despite a smaller than expected response to the Parent/Teacher interviews the teachers were pleased with the parents who were able to attend the evening. It is important that parents are aware of the progress, development and achievement of their child/ren to help them continue to make growth.
Our ES1 Mudyi assembly was a beautiful celebration of the learning of our kindergarten students. Enthusiastic singing, hilarious enactments and confident reading and commentary were parts of the assembly presentation today. More and more students were recognised for their positive effort and achievements and many silver awards were presented. Our students thrive on being affirmed and we strive to develop life-long learners who take pride in their efforts and development. It was fabulous to see so many parents and family in attendance.
This Saturday night (31 August) at 5pm O’Shaughnessy house will lead the Mass ministries and we appreciate the students who have volunteered to fulfil these important roles. We would love to see as many families as possible in attendance to share the Mass with the Parish community.
Remember – Kindness is Cool!
God Bless
