George Bernard Shaw is thought of by many as one of the greatest writers of plays in the English language. He was born in Dublin on this day in 1856, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925. Like Charles Dickens, his writings often expressed the need for changes in society.

One of George Bernard Shaw’s plays is called ‘Pygmalion’. It tells of a Cockney girl, Eliza Doolittle, who sold flowers on the streets of London. As a kind of “experiment” to see how people can change, she is taken to a different place and given fine clothes to wear. She is taught to speak and behave like a lady. One of the characters in the story is a Professor Higgins who treats her as though she is still a flower girl. Eliza speaks these words to Colonel Pickering who treats her like a lady:

“The difference between a lady and a flower-girl is not how she behaves, but how she’s treated. I shall always be a flower-girl to Professor Higgins, because he always treats me as a flower-girl, and always will. But I know I can be a lady to you, because you always treat me as a lady, and always will.

Term 3

Welcome to Term 3! Our students returned on Tuesday with much positive energy and enthusiasm for being back with friends and at school. Gold was once again the Term winner for the House Point competition and all students from K to 10 will enjoy a team “hot chip” lunch soon to congratulate them on their efforts. Lara Wilson topped the secondary house points and Lily Murphy the primary Gotchas – congratulations and well done girls! We congratulate all students who have been submitting their points for collation and hope to give out many more Bronze and Silver certificates soon. These certificates are given each time a student submits 10 Gotchas or House Points. We encourage students, particularly in secondary, to place their certificates in a folio as they are testament to their participation and positive contributions to our whole school community.

On Monday, our staff joined other schools from the Western Region for our spirituality day in Temora. It was a terrific day which had us all laughing, crying and thinking deeply about our role in Catholic Schools and our own spirituality. Fr Richard Leonard facilitated the day “A Survival Guide to Sane Spirituality in Catholic Education”. The workshop used film and media to explore the hallmarks of a Christian faith which can be sane and relevant for all of us and our students. The three connected themes were Jesus, discernment and mission.

We were lucky to once again be working with Leonie Anstey on Tuesday and Wednesday. Leonie works in class with our students, particularly with numeracy activities, which they find engaging and challenging for their learning. Teachers also participated by observing student learning and having the opportunity to discuss what takes place to plan for future learning and meeting student need.

We have many extracurricular activities taking place this week and we wish all students participating today in Mortimer Shield in Wagga all the best. We also pray that our students, parents and staff attending the Snow Trip tomorrow have a safe and fun-filled day.

Kindergarten 2019

An information evening will take place from 6pm tonight for all parents interested in the possibility of enrolling their child in Kindergarten for 2019. This session is open to all parents and will provide important information about Sacred Heart and what we offer as a school to help parents make an informed decision about schooling for their child. If you know anyone who is unsure about which school to choose, please encourage them to come along for an opportunity to take a look around and gain answers to any questions they may have.

iPads from Stage 2 – Parent forum

We will be holding a parent forum for all parents to discuss the possibility of introducing iPads from Year 3 (Stage 2). Currently iPads are required for all students from Years 5 to 10. Given the success of our iPad program for student learning, we are investigating the possibility of introducing iPads from Year 3 from 2019 to enhance learning. We would greatly appreciate parent thoughts and input, and to be able to dispel myths about the use of technology in the classroom. If you have a child in Kinder to Year 4, we strongly encourage you to come along to this session. The session will start at 7pm in Mr Winsor’s classroom, Primary Room 12.

Hennessy Visit

Parents of students in Year 10, along with your child, are invited to attend a Subject Selection Expo to get a taste of what subjects and pathways are on offer at Hennessy Catholic College, Young. This will be held next Tuesday 31 July from 5.00pm at Hennessy. The students have been invited to travel over from 1.00pm to meet with the KLA teachers and the 2019 Year 11 cohort. Students may return back to Cootamundra on the Hennessy bus leaving from the school at 3.25pm. Otherwise they can return with their parents when they meet them for a light meal from 5pm.  If you are currently exploring options for Senior School, we strongly urge you to check out what Hennessy has to offer as a way of continuing your child’s quality catholic education. I am currently on sick leave after requiring some minor surgery to remove more skin cancers. I had organised for this in the holidays, however more was required and unfortunately this has meant I am away from 25 July to 1 August at this stage. If you have any urgent matters, please contact the front office staff and they will put you through to the best person to assist in my absence.

I wish all students a productive Semester Two and hope that they take on advice provided in reports that were sent home at the end of last term. I spoke to Year 10 on Tuesday about making the most of the fabulous opportunities available to them for the remainder of their schooling at Sacred Heart. It is never too late to step up and put in maximum effort. Effort is always rewarded, and by our students giving their very best to their studies, they are ensuring they have choices as they leave our school. Our goal is to make sure that students have as many choices as they want when they leave so they can have the future they hope for.

We have excellent teachers at Sacred Heart, who provide rigorous learning for all our students. They are very dedicated to assisting your child in their learning and I encourage you to speak to your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns. NAIDOC liturgy

Our Indigenous and Stage3 students respectfully lead our NAIDOC liturgy yesterday. Jordan Beath gave a beautiful and very proud welcome to country. We celebrated the many indigenous women who have contributed greatly to our country. The theme Because of her, we can allow us to honour these remarkable women.

Grandparents Liturgy

Today our infants’ students lead us in the celebration of our grandparents on the feast day of St Joachim and St Ann.  The students gave a beautiful reflection of why their grandparents are so special to them

2018 Archdiocesan Public Speaking Competition

The Public speaking school level finals were held on Monday 2^nd July.  All finalists are to be commended for their efforts.  They were very impressive and received great feedback from the adjudicators.  We would like to thank our adjudicators for giving up their time, their professionalism and their thorough feedback.

From these finals, the following students have been selected to represent Sacred Heart against St Anne’s in Temora on Thursday 9^th August (Term 3, Week 3).  The students selected were:

TWC Tennis

Today we had 7 Stage 2 students participate in the Todd Woodbridge Cup Tennis Gala Day held in Cootamundra. The students had a wonderful day.

Mortimer Shield

Stage 3 Mortimer Shield Rugby League team and the Tag League Team Red had a great day in wagga today with both teams winning their round game as well as the first of their semi-finals. Unfortunately, our girls team was knockout one game short of the Final while our boys team progressed to the final.  thank you to the Mrs McLeod for supporting team on this and to the parents who assisted with transport and to Mick Nasser for his assistance with coaching the boys team.
