Today is the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Who were they?

Simon was introduced to Jesus by his brother, Andrew, who was also a fisherman. Later Jesus changed Simon’s name to “PETER”, from the Greek word, ‘Petros’, meaning “Rock”. Peter and his faith would be a rock on which Jesus would build his church, even though Peter would run away and deny knowing Jesus in his hour of need.

Peter served as the leader of the first group of Christians. He travelled to the centre of the Roman Empire, and there became the first bishop of the city of Rome. The bishop of Rome is now called the “pope”, a word which means “father”, recognising his leadership.

PAUL used to be called “Saul” and had been a Jewish official who hunted down Christians. He was one of those responsible for their deaths, but then had a vision that changed his life, and he became a Christian. Being given a new name, “Paul”, was a sign of being called to live a new kind of life.

We have heard how both Peter and Paul were unlikely choices to help continue the life and work of Jesus - Peter denied knowing Jesus, and Paul had persecuted Christians. Because they are both unlikely characters, and because neither of them was “perfect”, we are reminded that God accepts us as we are, with our limitations.

Peter and Paul are linked together because, in their different ways, they did so much to inspire and build up the Church.

We’ll use as a short reading and prayer, some words of Saint Paul, found in a letter that he wrote to the Christians in Rome:

“For those who love God everything works out for good, because God has chosen us to bear the image of Jesus, his Son. With God on our side, who can be against us? Even if we face hard times or are threatened - God’s love is greater still, and nothing can ever separate us from his love. Through all difficulties we can never be failures or losers because of the power of God’s love.” (based on Romans 828-39)

Week 8

Year 7 enjoyed a reflection day in Tumut on Thursday, joining with students from St Anne’s Temora and McAulay Tumut. They had a terrific day playing, praying and reflecting and were inspired and challenged by the Youth Ministry Team who facilitated the day. Thanks to McAulay for hosting the day and to Mr Dan O’Brien and Mrs Patrece Maxwell for organising and supervising on the day.

The theme for the day was “Let Your Light Shine” and provided opportunities for students to discuss and reflect on how we can always be ourselves and that with faith we can achieve great things.

Community Breakfast

Thanks to our Wellbeing Team and all those who helped out on Wednesday morning for providing another delicious Community Breakfast. It was lovely to have so many family members join us for pancakes and hot chocolate. Thank you to our student leaders for helping with cooking and serving so early on the day. We were blessed with a beautiful, sunny morning (which wasn’t even too cold…)

Reports

This term has been an exceptionally busy one with teachers going above and beyond to meet the many government requirements now in place. We are very blessed to have such a dedicated and caring team, and as the semester hurtles toward the end I would like to extend my gratitude for all that they do to ensure not only quality teaching and learning but also looking after the wellbeing of our students.

Teachers have been writing and collating reports and Primary reports will be sent home Wednesday 4 July with Secondary going home on Friday 6 July. Please read your child’s report carefully. Parent teacher interviews will be held Thursday 2 August from 3.30pm to 5.30pm and Tuesday 7 August from 5pm to 6.30pm.

We will be using Schoolzine as our booking system for Parent/Teacher/Student reports. I am hoping that the system will be ready to start booking from next Friday. I will send home details for how to book via Schoolzine as soon as the information is ready. A link will also be provided on the school website. For those requiring assistance, please contact the front office and they will be able to make bookings for you.

Warning about online games

Most parents of adolescent children would be aware of the online game, ‘Fortnite’. For many young people, the addictive nature of this game is having adverse effects on children’s behaviour and affecting their mental health. With over 125 million registered players worldwide, this game encourages players to battle each other to death using a variety of weaponry.

With an age rating of 13+, this game raises many cybersafety concerns. Unfortunately, it allows unmoderated chat between players, leaving children exposed to be contactable by 'randomers' online. This function alone makes it unsuitable for primary aged children.

In light of last week’s announcement from the World Health Organisation now recognising “gaming disorder” as a mental health issue, this special report will help parents gain a greater insight into Fortnite and the concerns surrounding it. Parents are encouraged to reassess their gaming allowances and better manage technology usage at home.
