Last week the Beyond Sacred Heart program ran in a modified and COVID friendly manner. Whilst it was not without its challenges it was wonderful to see the manner in which our Year 10 students conducted themselves in preparation and during their vocational interviews. The feedback of the virtual format was very supportive and appreciative of the efforts that were made to manage the program. A huge thank you to Mr Mahon, Ms Withers, Mrs Cartwright and the bevy of professional and tradespeople who assisted in any way. Please read the more detailed account in Ms Withers report further on in the newsletter.
Even as I was typing the newsletter there were changes to the COVID protocols for end-of-year arrangements. Last night it was announced that there was some relaxing of numbers for social gatherings. We are now hopeful that this will mean that the graduation for our Year 10 students will be able to held in the auditorium of the S & C Club without dividing the guests between the auditorium and the Wattle room. At this stage we are still limiting the total numbers to allow the students, staff and two parents to attend. If there are further changes to the number we will advise asap. Please make payment to the front office as soon as soon as you are able so that we can finalise many of the details. As you can imagine all our end-of-year plans are changeable and our dedicated front office staff are trying to manage all the activities and functions that now need to be organised.
Our Awards Ceremony is also subject to change but at the moment we are planning for three separate functions to accommodate the presentation in line with the protocols which limits gatherings over 300 people. Considering that we currently have 325 students enrolled and a staff of 40 plus we are well over the restricted numbers without parents. We are planning to hold an Infants presentation at 9.30am on 9 December for Infants students and their parents. We imagine it will only take about 15-20 minutes. Then a Primary presentation at 10.30am on 9 December with Stage 2 and 3 students and their parents. This should go for 20 minutes. Finally we will host a Secondary ceremony for our senior students and their parents at the traditional 12noon. And this will hopefully not exceed 30 minutes. All parents of award winners will be contacted to encourage them to attend the relevant ceremony. We do appreciate that many parents have children in two or three of the different ceremonies and it may not be possible to attend all of the presentations. We will try and accommodate parents as much as we are able. This is not an ideal arrangement but is the best way around the limitations of a whole school function and may still change. We are also not able to have special guests to present any of the awards or perpetual trophies. However, we will publish a list of all the respective prize winners so that they are recognised by the community.
The Year 6 Thanksgiving Mass will proceed next Friday 4 December at 12noon. Again it is a COVID friendly proposition and will be only for the Primary students and the Year 6 parents. Unfortunately there is still to be no mingling before and after Mass and we will still strive to make it a memorable and enjoyable recognition of the end of primary schooling for our wonderful year 6 students. Thank you to Mrs Maxwell and the Stage 3 teachers for all their preparation for the Mass. Our Stage 3 students will also be participating in a very abbreviated excursion after all other options have been cancelled. They will be travelling to Wagga Wagga on Thursday 10 December to see a movie and go ten-pin bowling as a culmination of a huge year for all students.
Tomorrow we will hear from all of the nominated students for the Student Leadership Team for 2021. Our current Year 5 and Year 9 students enthusiastically partipated in their respective leadership Days last week, where they considered what makes a good leader and what is expected from the student leaders at Sacred Heart. They very sensibly and maturely identified the desirable qualities and nominated their peers appropriately. The speeches will be presented to the student body in the morning, after which all students will vote for the House and School Leaders. We have found the new House leader system a very positive development for the roles which our student fulfil and we look forward to building the House culture into 2021 and nurturing a pride and passion for their house and school. We will inform the new Student Leadership team on Friday afternoon. I was fortunate enough, along with the 2021 Year 10 PCA, Mrs Kylie Murray, to interview our senior nominees and our students were impressive and wise in their understanding of what it takes to be a leader and what is required of them to fulfil the role. All nominees spoke honestly and enthusiastically about the opportunities that they have been given at Sacred Heart and expressed a desire to give back to their school community, to make it the best place that it can be for all staff and students.
Tomorrow we will host our Year 7 transition afternoon for students from other feeder schools. Ms Marsay has been very busy preparing a day filled with secondary experiences and to showcase all that Sacred Heart has to offer. If you know of any Year 6 student who may be interested to see what Sacred Heart is all about please encourage them to join us tomorrow 26 November. If they presented at the Front Office we would gladly accommodate them for the day.
Next week we will have an ex-student in the school grounds filming all things wonderful about Sacred Heart to make a short video to promote our school in the wider community. All parents have already signed a media permission form to indicate whether their child/ren can be captured in media publications. We are aware of which students cannot be filmed or photographed. If you have any concerns that differ from your original release form about your child/ren’s involvement in the promotion then please contact the school before the end of the week.
REMINDER………. ALL students are still required to bring a water bottle that can be refilled at the taps as needed. As the weather is now very hot it is obvious that many students are coming to school without a drink bottle and require plastic cups to maintain the necessary fluid intake. Please leave a bottle in their bags so that they have the opportunity to replenish their water supplies throughout the day.

It’s now very easy to open multiple Instagram accounts, Instagram allows for up to five accounts to be managed at any one time. What is not as easy is deleting any of these accounts at a later date.
Instagram has been a bit tricky with this process.
It has simplified your ability to remove an account from your particular device by logging out of it, but this isn’t deleting the account.
It has provided you with the ability to deactivate/disable your account with the option of reactivating it later, but this isn’t deletion either.
To add to the fun, Instagram claims it will be impossible to resurrect data from your account, and your username can never be recycled to anyone again (even you).
They don’t want you to go.
It can be permanently deleted, it just takes a few steps , and looking outside of the app.

Beyond Sacred Heart is a program designed to, in some ways, further prepare students for the future. This year is the ninth time this program has been conducted and will cover a range of activities, culminating in mock interviews on Friday. A range of different guests and activities have been arranged and students will also be allocated time to complete their resumes and cover letters for the mock interviews.
On Monday, Chris Wells, a former student, discussed his journey since leaving Sacred Heart. Chris has worked in the mining industry in supervisory roles. He has just changed employment and is starting with Snowy 2.0. We then start the Interview Skills workshops and develop cover letters and resumes for their interviews on Friday. Later in the day Mrs Cath Alderman and Mrs Leanne McGrath, the Stage Six Career Coordinators from Cootamundra High and Hennessy Catholic College respectively, presented information regarding their roles and this will involve subject selection, University admissions and scholarship advice.
On Tuesday morning, the students enjoyed a shared breakfast at E-Claire’s coffee shop from 8:00 am. The girls then walked to Jak+Jill’s and the boys visited Kevin Deep’s Clothing, to gain information on appropriate attire to wear to a job interview. Thank you to Paul Deep, Jamie Hall and Tracey Ewings for their insight. Chris Ryan from Flemings Real Estate then presented information on renting accommodation, paying bonds and the legalities involved. After lunch, Matt Holt, from the Westpac Bank presented a talk on financial matters including traps with credit cards, how to apply for loans, issues around defaulting and how to manage bank accounts.
Students were treated to a Zoom meeting with Miss Judy Donnelly, who told of her story and career pathway since leaving Sacred Heart. Judy is currently the Head of Government Relations & Corporate Social Responsibility for the AFL. She has been the Press Secretary for Tony Abbott and a Contiki Tour Guide amongst other roles. She had a very powerful message of networking and building that network, taking calculated risks, pushing yourself to get out of your comfort zone, travel and take new opportunities.
The next session was on interview skills including body language and response techniques. Students were given the opportunity to research their chosen careers and prepare some responses for general interview questions.
Mrs Deb Tiernan then advised the students on grooming for an interview. The girls were taken through make-up tips and modelled their interview attire. Thank you, Deb, for your expertise.
On Thursday, a food challenge was held, in which students prepared and cooked their lunch on a budget. The students were in groups of three or four and were limited to $5.00 per person. The meals produced were very nutritious and smelt amazing.
John Murray and Andrew Alderman presented a session on basic routine mechanical tasks associated with driving. It involved checking fluid levels, tyre conditions, how to change a tyre, attaching a trailer, checking lights and fuses. Each student completed a checklist of tasks.
After lunch, areas around the school were prepared and set-up for the interviews.
The week concluded with all students attending mock interviews. This year we had to conduct the mock interviews via Zoom. Thank you to Mrs Janet Cartwright for her guidance and efforts to assist with setting this up. We all know a great deal more about the inner workings of Zoom.
The panel career areas and personnel are sourced after the students select the areas they are interested in. We then put together the panels based on the best fit for the students. This year the focus areas covered by the panels included Agriculture, Business, Education, Health, Law, Military, Policing and Trades, and our list of possible community members willing and able to assist has reached over 170. Thank you to Mrs McGylnn and Mrs Deep for being the interview receptionists and grading the students on their presentation and manners.
After the pressure of the morning, we wound down with a BBQ and the traditional Staff V Yr10 volleyball match. The staff retain the title!
We would like to thank all the community members and staff that were involved in making the program so successful and the students for treating the experience as a lifelong and valuable learning opportunity.

Stage 2 Primary NRL Gala Day
A fabulous day out in the sunshine at the Stage 2 NRL Gala Day last Wednesday in Young. Sacred Heart had a boys tackle team and two girls league tag teams. Thank you to Miss Van, Amy Fitzgerald, Janice Dunk and Andrew Johnson for your help and support of the students throughout the day.
Primary Sport Swimming -
Primary Sport Swimming continues this Thursday. Students will walk to and from the pool with their classroom teacher. Please ensure that your child/ren has their swimming gear (including a rash top), a hat, a drink bottle and $2.50 entry money (payable to their teacher on the morning of).
Please note that the pool is undergoing management changes. Regarding pool passes, any external corporate fitness passes do not cover entry to the pool for school swimming. After speaking with management, it is advised that you view your membership’s terms and conditions to check as to whether your pass covers entry for school swimming. Otherwise, the $2.50 entry fee is to be paid each week.
Friday Secondary Sport - Swimming
The pool has again been booked for Sport on Friday, and for the next few weeks. Students need a rash shirt, swimmers, sunscreen, hat and water bottle.
Please bring $2.50 for pool entry, payable to roll teachers on the morning of. Pool memberships are accepted. Fitness Passports are no longer accepted by the pool. See above for explanation.
Year 7-9 Girls League Tag
This Wednesday 25th November the Year 7-9 Girls League Tag Gala day will be held in Young. Bus leaves at 8:45 sharp. There is no canteen so please bring enough food and water to last the day. Bring sunscreen, a hat, football boots, water bottles, and your sports uniform. Playing uniforms will be collected at the end of the day.
Students will return to school by recess and are expected to join their period 5 class.

Marymead offers Foster Care case management support to children and young people who have entered Out of Home Care across a number of regions in Southern and Western NSW. These children and young people generally enter care due to a breakdown of parental care which may be due to illness, crisis or exposure to abuse and / or neglect. Our Foster Care Program offers respite care, short-term / emergency care and medium to long term care.
Marymead works to ensure that children, young people and their families, including those who are most vulnerable across Canberra and the surrounding NSW regions, are well supported through their key life transitions and are able to achieve positive life outcomes and live fulfilling, productive and happy lives.
