Week 3

We pray that all mothers were able to enjoy a lovely Mother’s Day. Mother's Day is a beautiful acknowledgement of very special people in our lives. For many it can be a day full of heartache. For those of us who never grew up with a mum, lost our mums, or are even estranged from our mums, it can be a day that's filled with tears and longing. Please keep these families in your prayers at this time.

Pupil Free Day – Friday 18 May

Please remember that it is a pupil free day tomorrow to allow for staff professional learning all day. We have no students who require makeup Naplan tests and we thank you for ensuring students were able to complete these as necessary over the past 3 days. Thanks to our students for taking these important tests seriously and attempting to do their best. Thanks to Mrs Nicky Trinder who has committed her time to ensuring the smooth running of the tests in our school. We look forward to the information provided in the upcoming months.

Clothing Pool

We are very grateful to our generous parents who are now running the clothing pool to ensure we have high quality school uniform available at reduced prices. We have some families who have taken items home to “try” but have not yet returned or paid for them. If this is you, can you please take some time to either return them or pay at the front office asap? This would be greatly appreciated. We are always looking for quality items and if you are able to make a donation, please leave them with the front office.

Winter Jackets

We have received expressions of interest from families to purchase the winter jacket. Rather than wasting paper sending an order form home to all families, if you need to order a new jacket please print the attached form, complete it and return to the front office by Wednesday 23 May. If you are unable to print, please speak to our wonderful front office ladies who will be able to assist. If you need to email the front office the address is: office.shcoota@cg.catholic.edu.au

Year 10 Retreat

It was my great pleasure to attend the Year 10 retreat with our students on Tuesday and Wednesday. Our students were a credit to themselves and excellent ambassadors for the school. They were helpful, attentive and respectful throughout the two days and were excellent when required for their clean up duty teams.

There was much fun and laughter as well as deep reflection throughout our time together. Students were given opportunities to fully appreciate the gift of their own uniqueness and worth, understand the potential they have to influence the way others value them and to recognise that it is possible and desirable to know Jesus as an intimate friend.

We thank the Youth Ministry Team Australia who facilitated the activities over the two days. Many of the team were 18 or 19 years old and volunteer to provide these opportunities for our students. They were very well trained and capable at providing the rich and diverse program which fully engaged our students.

Thanks to Mr Andrew Alderman and Mr Dan O’Brien for driving, running Trivia and cooking up a storm! It is very much appreciated that our staff take time out of their busy lives to provide these opportunities for our students. Thanks also to Mrs Patrece Maxwell for organising this special event in our Year 10s lives.

Cootamundra Sports Foundation Awards

Congratulations to our students and teams who were nominated for Awards at the recent Cootamundra Sports Foundation Awards.

Sacred Heart Central School Stage 3 Rugby League Team

The team capped off a successful year of rugby league by ending up as runners-up in the State Final of the Independent and Catholic Primary Schools competition.

After winning the Mortimer Shield in Wagga, the team played against very strong opposition at St Marys in Sydney to advance to the Grand Final, where St John Fisher Primary School from Tumbi -Umbi prevailed 22-6.

A very talented group of players, who excel in both rugby codes, was managed by teacher Lisa Buchanan with coaching help from Michael Nasser, Luke Dabin, John Murray and Brendan Gale.

The team comprised: Darcy O’Toole, Ethan Shepherd, Ned Murray, Lachlan Dabin, Sam Sharman, Lachlan Smirl, Rhyley Kennedy, Charly Thompson, Ryan Bourne, James Patterson, Oscar Roberts, Sam Nasser, Jed Guthrie, Jake Blackney, Jay Mugridge, Corey Gale, Jake Finnigan, Toby Rumble and Jack Murphy.

ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD - LACHLAN SEDGWICK – RUGBY UNION & LEAGUE

Lachlan Sedgwick is another young Cootamundra sports man, who has great all-round ability.

In rugby union, Lachlan represented & captained the Southern Inland U13s team against both the ACT & Western rep sides.

Lachlan also played for an U14s combined Cootamundra &West Wyalong side, winning the junior rugby Bears coaches award for 2017.

In September, he attended an emerging talent camp with the ACT Brumbies which earned him the U13s player of the camp. Lachlan also had a busy & successful year playing rugby league. Among his achievements were winning the U13 best & fairest & playing in the Sacred Heart U16 team which won the final of the state small schools completion.

Lachlan is also a junior rugby league referee.

During summer, Lachlan had another great year in the pool. He was the Cootamundra 13 years champion & at such a young age was the club captain & he represented the Southern Inland at the country regional swimming championships.

Through the school system, Lachlan swam at the CCC state carnival in four events at the Homebush Olympic pool. He achieved two PBs at this carnival.

JUNIOR SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR - JACK RUSKIN – MARTIAL ARTS

Jack Ruskin is a young man who in 2017 had great success in Martial Arts.

Jack was seven years of age when he began training in Cootamundra under instructor Andrew Finch, he is now 14.

Training for Jack is usually three days a week (5 classes) but inthe lead up to his black belt grading, Jack trained four days each week. He also credits the help he   received from Ben Filmer (who was a former award winner at our annual dinner).

Throughout the year Jack attended training days at Cowra, Dubbo & Orange as well as camps in Sydney & Coolum. It was at the Coolum camp that his instructors invited him to try for black belt gradings.

The grading camp was extremely tough & some of the tasks Jack had to achieve are as follows:

  • A speech & demonstration of his knife defence moves
  • Break boards with both his hand & a side kick
  • 6km run in 30 minutes
  • knife hand defence with a real knife &
  • 40 x 2 minute rounds of sparring.

A black belt for a 14 year old is a great achievement. His other sports when time permits are rugby union, cricket & basketball.

Sports Shorts update

If you would like to have your say regards the two options that were sent home to be considered, please email the front office your preference of either Canterbury or CSM by Wednesday 23 May. If you wish to add comments, that is also fine so that the uniform committee can make an informed decision which reflects our family preferences. We have received information with regards to another style which may be preferred through this process and will have a variety of sizes available as samples at the front office soon. We will let you know when this happens and request more input at that time. As we currently do not have a “school uniform short” style except navy with no coloured logos, we hope to have something that will be an actual uniform to allow our students to represent the school better, as they do with all other uniforms currently in place.

Thank you to the families who have responded to the email/survey sent out. Your feedback is much appreciated and will be considered by the uniform committee soon.

With blessings,

Mrs Janet Cartwright
