From the Principal
In the early 1960s many primary schools still issued their students with blotting paper. It was used to absorb excess ink from writing with wooden pens that had metal nibs. After only a few words those pens had to be dipped into the inkwell to take up more ink.
In the 1930s in Hungary, Ladislao Biro produced thick quick-drying ink. He placed that ink into a thin capillary tube in a plastic casing. The pen had a rotating ball of metal at its point. No longer would people have to use inkwells or fountain pens, but his “biros” (as they became known) were very expensive at first.
Thousands of “biros” were used by members of the armed forces in Britain and America, and so became very popular, and they were then produced more cheaply. It was on this day in 1946 that they first went on sale in Britain.
God our Father, until the time of the printing press, people copied the Gospel, writing it by hand. Slowly the Gospel took shape - both on the page and deep within themselves. I ask that the Gospel - the Good News of your love - may be written in me not with ink but with the Spirit of God. 2 Cor 33
Only then will I grow as a credible witness of the wealth of your love.

Week 6
Elouera wanted to pass on their thanks to Megan Gale and her PASS class for an absolutely wonderful day last week at their athletics carnival. Our students rose to the occasion and were truly fantastic. Our students made a huge effort to make each and every one of the Elouera students finish the day feeling included and extremely happy. As Elouera staff told our students, “this is one of the only opportunities that our students have to socialise with ‘friends’ outside our little school.” It was just so wonderful to see the relationships developed during the day and the friendship your students offered to all of our students.
Well done to your students and to Megan for all the fantastic organisation!!
Tomorrow is our last day of Kindergarten 2019 orientation. Thanks to Mrs Kate Maher who has done a mighty effort in ensuring a highly successful program which has been very enjoyable for all. Thanks also to Miss Emma McDonnell who has attended each session to assist with the transition.
At this stage we will have two Kindergarten classes and Mrs Kate Maher and Miss Emma McDonnell will be the teachers.
If you are aware of any students who may have missed enrolment or orientation, please let them know that it is not too late and we are able to continue to accept enrolments until the end of the term. Beyond Sacred Heart
Our Year 10s have been enjoying a varied and interesting week which has provided a range of opportunities to assist them to move into the next phase of their lives “Beyond Sacred Heart”. Thank you to all the students who have engaged so willingly with guest speakers and the activities that have been planned by Mrs Megan Gale and Mr Tim Mahon. We wish everyone all the best tomorrow as they have their mock job interviews.
Thank you to the many volunteers from local businesses and enterprises who will comprise our interview panels tomorrow. Each year we ask a range of volunteers to form the panels, tailored to the needs and requests of our students. We endeavour to match as closely as possible the pathways that our students are interested in to ensure as close to a real life experience as possible. The advice and feedback from these sessions is always incredibly valuable for our students.
Student Leadership 2019 Days
Congratulations to Mrs Patrece Maxwell who organised fabulous days for our Year 5 and Year 9 students as they prepare to become leaders for 2019. The students’ level of participation was superb and what they offered during the days was thoughtful and reflective. Thank you and congratulations to the outgoing student leadership teams who spoke at the days and provided insights into what leadership means at Sacred Heart. The current leaders spoke with honesty and passion about how much they have learnt, contributed to the school and were able to make a real difference.
Apex Christmas Carnival
We invite our Primary students to join together to sing two Christmas songs on Saturday 24 November at the Apex Christmas Carnival. Students are to wear Christmas themed clothes (not school uniform). A note was sent home to all interested students and we need those returned so we know how many students to expect on the night. Thanks to Lisa Buchanan for organising and Kylie Winsor for assisting at the evening. Our students should be singing at approximately 6.10pm. Please see the note that went home for further details.
End of the year parties
As we approach the end of the year and celebrations of all sorts abound, we would like to remind you about some important tips for safe parties with teens. Our older children are reaching an age where they could be exposed to alcohol, drugs and sexting – all things that can be talked about in the presence of your child when they are socialising and you need to make sure they are prepared for when these conversations come up and how to say no.
Our students had talks from the police liaison officers today about these issues. Ask them what they learnt and what they would do if they had to face this kind of situation or pressure from peers. Thanks to Joe Camilleri who spoke to all our students in years 7 to 10 today about the law, these challenges and how to keep themselves safe.

There is to be no alcohol consumed before or at our Year 10 dinner. Students who have been found to have had anything to drink prior will be asked to leave the event. Our Year 10 celebration is strictly a no alcohol event. If anyone is planning to have a party afterwards, this is NOT a school event or condoned by the school. All our students are under the legal age for drinking alcohol and we encourage any parent considering hosting a party to be well aware of the laws that apply to these situations and how to keep our children safe.
