From the Principal

Every child of the Jewish faith learns the words of a prayer called the “Shema”. Its opening words are these: “Hear, Israel, and listen: the Lord our God is the only God. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”

Each morning and evening Jews recite these and some other words from the Bible that together make up the “Shema”, which is Hebrew for “hear” or “listen”, the first word of the prayer. The same passage continues: “Let these words today be written in your heart. Write them, too, on the doorposts of your house.”

And so Jewish families have a small, thin container made of wood or metal attached to the right-hand doorpost of their homes. This prayer box, called a “Mezuzah” is a few centimetres long and maybe a centimetre wide. It contains some parchment on which is written the words of the “Shema”. As family members enter the house, they touch the “Mezuzah” as a sign of respect for God and for what he has told them to do. It also serves as a reminder of God’s presence.

The opening words - “the Lord our God is the only God” - were first spoken to the people of Israel when they were led out from slavery in Egypt and guided towards the Promised Land. Down the ages Jews have held firmly to their belief in one God, giving priority in their lives only to him.

Lord, inspire me to get my priorities right

and make my choices wisely.

Amen.

Week 3

Please keep in your prayers Emma McDonnell, her family, friends and our whole school community. We also pray for the Drs and nurses who are taking such good care of Emma. Thank you to our parishioners who prayed for Emma yesterday and for all the support we have received during this difficult time.

Congratulations to our public speakers

Lily Murphy, Lucy Shields, Declan Brown, Bella Jones, Archer Blackman, Angus Hunt, Hannah Drum and Emma Shields travelled to Temora yesterday to compete in the interschool level for public speaking. The quality of speaking was outstanding and we congratulate our students who competed for their preparation and delivery on the day.

Special congratulations to Lucy, Angus and Declan who won their division and will now compete at the WR finals to be held in West Wyalong.

Congratulations Maddie Brown

Maddie Brown from Year 7 decided that she was ready to cut her long hair and thought that it could be put to good use, not just have a haircut. She approached the Leadership Team about her idea to raise funds for the Leukemia Foundation and wanted to be able to cut her hair and shave her head at school to raise awareness for this very worthy cause – which we fully supported.

We congratulate Maddie for her compassion and consideration for others and her courage to take part in the Greatest Shave. Last Friday, her father did the chop to cut the bulk of her hair and we thank Trish Hines for then shaving the remainder of her hair.

Thank you to everyone who donated to the cause and assisting Maddie to raise over $3000. What an outstanding effort!

Trent Barrett Shield

Thank you to all our students who competed at the Trent Barrett Shield on Tuesday. Your sportsmanship and encouragement of each other was noted and I received much positive feedback about our team spirit. Thanks to Jacki Cameron for organising and managing on the day and to Todd Bryant, David Harris and Mark Lake who assisted with coaching. Thank you to all our parents who also supported on the day.

Small Schools League Grand Final

Good luck to our U13s and U16s teams who will compete in the Small Schools Rugby League grand final in Dubbo next week on Wednesday!

Year 7 Info evening

All parents and students interested in attending tours of our Secondary facilities, having a chat with our friendly staff and finding out information about our Year 7 transition program for 2019, are invited to come along on Tuesday 14 August. Tours will commence at 5.30pm with our current Year 7 students as guides. Parents are asked to come to the front office so they can be introduced to their guide.

The information session will commence promptly at 6.30pm and finish at 7pm. This will be followed by a light supper and opportunity to speak to teachers and ask any questions you may have.

8/9 Elective evening

We are holding a showcase and information session for all Year 8 and 9 students and parents to consider their elective choices for 2019. Teachers will have information and displays in Rooms 7 & 8 Secondary and be available to speak to about the different electives on offer.

We are very lucky to be able to offer a wide range of elective choices including:

Agricultural Technology, Industrial Technology - Metal, Industrial Technology - Wood, Commerce, Child Studies, PASS, Drama, STEM, Food Technology, French, Music, Textiles and Design Technology and Visual Arts. Our students can select from these options, however depending on numbers of students who select each subject, we usually run 8 electives for our Year 9/10 cohort.

The showcase will be open from 5.30pm and the information session will commence at 6pm. The information will assist in understanding the processes and considerations and timeline for when options need to be submitted and classes that will run in 2019 notified.

Uniform Committee Meeting

The uniform committee will meet on Monday 13 August at 5pm in the staff room. All parents are welcome to attend and we value your input.

Change to bus route

Year 11 and 12 students who live on the Milvale bus run now have an option to continue their Catholic education pathway as an extended bus service will be available for Year 11 and 12 students to catch the bus to Hennessy Catholic College in Young. K to 10 students are still able to access the Catholic education option at Sacred Heart as usual. Please see the attached letter from the Principal at Hennessy, Mrs Trazel Scott for further information.
